Product Features and Benefits
Easy Controls

The control panel on the X1 features heavy duty, retro looking switches and indicator lights for power and ready status on the machine. The first switch on the left side of the control panel is the power switch, which is accompanied by a red power light just to the upper right, and a red temperature “ready” light below that. As the centerpiece to the fine face of the X1, a boiler temperature gauge adds a unique look and functionality by showing the proper temperature for either brewing espresso or steam production. Two additional switches are located to the right of the gauge. The first switch is coffee brew switch, which starts and stops the flow of espresso. The last switch on the right activates the steam system. When the machine is at the proper temperature as indicated by the temperature light, and confirmed by the temperature gauge, you may dispense steam from the steam wand by opening the steam control valve located on the right side of the machine.

If cappuccino, mochas, or café lattes are your desire, you can count on the X1 to produce an abundance of steam. The stainless steel steam wand is equipped with a frothing tip that helps ensure rich foam, even if you are a novice. The steam wand also swivels to accommodate a 12 or 20 oz. milk-frothing pitcher. To release steam from the machine, simply turn the steam control knob on the right side of the machine.

JL Martin May 14, 2003 We bought one of these as a Christmas present for ourselves and cannot praise ti enough!  Everybody who sees it falls in love with its funky styling and it makes great coffee too, whether using the pods or your own ground coffee.  Only quibble would be that it doesn't always fill both cups at the same speed but I think that is an occupational hazard with most machines.

Tony Marshall Jul 2, 2003 I bought one of these a month or two ago to replace a Krups machine (not on this site - the Espremio is the closest current model, I guess).
The purchase was driven as much by the need toget something that looked good in the kitchen as it was by the desire to make good coffee. Thankfully the X1 does both. It's taken me some time to get the mixture right when using ground coffee - there's a lot of variables, with filter sizes and the like, but I got there in the end. As for ESEs - they're an (expensive) snap.
The rear-mounted reservoir is a bit inconvenient - the pick up tube has a tendency to flick water out when you remove it - but that's a small quibble.

Ultimately I don't think it makes any better espresso than the Krups - despite being over three times as expensive.

It is an aesthetic thing really - but for me, the looks really are important - my counter space is at a premium, and I couldn't afford to have an ugly machine out all the time.
That meant I had to put it away after each use, and that meant I didn't get to use it. This one stays out, so it gets used.....

charles Feb 21, 2004 One can make surprisingly good espresso with the X1, though it does have its flaws.   Pressure is quite good, but there is no cutoff, which leads to soggy pucks.  The steam wand is to short and tight.  All in all, it is not particularly good value for the money - you can get a better espresso maker for less.  That said, would I trade mine?  No.  It makes excellent espresso if treated properly (the pods are miserable to my mind, but I roast my own coffee and grind it in a Rocky) and its really quite pretty to look at.  And as I am an architect-type and live in a small city apartment, that is enough.  If design and space are not important to you, get a silvia.  If they are, this is a great aesthetic/function compromise
